Danish Centre for Particle Therapy Uses Black Box Emerald KVM Over IP to Enable Efficient Collaboration Across Hospital CampusUTRECHT, Netherlands — March 5, 2020 — Black Box, an industry-leading provider of IT connectivity solutions, today announced that the new Danish Centre for Particle Therapy at Aarhus University Hospital — one of the largest hospitals in Europe and named best hospital in Denmark 11 years in a row — is using Black Box Emerald SE transmitters for KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) signal extension and switching over IP. The Emerald solution allows doctors in different areas of the expansive hospital campus to collaborate remotely, using shared video and illustration tools to support diagnosis and the development of treatment plans.
“It is difficult to overstate the impact of this Black Box KVM solution in improving our efficiency,” said Stefan Kalmar, IT-project manager at the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy. “In addition to eliminating the considerable amount of time required to walk to and from each patient care meeting, the solution makes consulting with other doctors much more convenient. As a result, it is easier for us — and the centre as a whole — to keep patient treatment on schedule and to maintain a high standard of care.” The Danish Centre for Particle Therapy provides highly specialized radiation therapy for cancer patients from across the country. With its new 71-ton particle accelerator (or cyclotron), the facility uses particle therapy — a gentler alternative to conventional radiation therapy — to treat children and adults with tumors in the brain or near the spine. Emerald allows extension and switching of HD (DVI) video, high-speed USB 2.0, and bidirectional analogue audio over an IP network so that the various specialists working with cancer patients can focus on collaborating with colleagues rather than on the supporting technology. As a high-performance KVM system, Emerald ensures that video quality remains uncompromised — critical to effective diagnosis — and that the overall solution is responsive, without the lag that can make collaboration difficult. The combination of the Black Box Boxilla KVM manager with the Emerald SE extenders not only helps the hospital to comply with security requirements regarding the visibility and transmission of patient data but also makes it easy to configure and manage the complete KVM system from a single intuitive access point. Stefan Kalmar, IT-project manager at the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy One of the reasons for implementing Emerald was the system’s support of lossless transmission of HD video, whereas common remote desktop (software) solutions today use lossy compression algorithms that could result in inaccurate visualization of critical medical imagery. “The deployment of Emerald SE by the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy demonstrates the importance of image quality, responsiveness, and flexible control options in KVM solutions supporting remote collaboration,” said John Hickey, senior director, KVM business at Black Box. “With Emerald making it easy for doctors to connect and review images together, the centre can improve the efficiency with which it delivers advanced care and treatment to cancer patients.” Further details on Black Box and its full product portfolio are available at www.blackbox.eu. # # # About Black BoxBlack Box has been a world-leading provider of premier IT infrastructure solutions for more than 40 years.
